It’s Time to Start Talking about eLearning Security

It’s funny. When I ask people if they ever think about eLearning security, they often come back with the same thing: “You mean security training?”

It pretty much answers my question: When it comes to eLearning, security isn’t quite top of mind.

And yet, it’s an area where sensitive information is being shared about an organization’s strategies, processes, customers, products—you name it. Virtual eLearning participants can insert themselves into the flow of real-time communication. They can sift through presentation materials. They can check in on their own time to access archived information.

From anywhere. At any time. On any device.

Talk about all the ways an unauthorized party can gain access to sensitive information. Information that could include:

  • Military training courses
  • Power grid operation training
  • Proprietary pharmaceutical drug training
  • Competitive briefings
  • Merger and Acquisition information

And this goes beyond corporate data. What about government organizations? What about the very agencies whose mission is to keep citizens safe?

Whether the data is deliberately hacked or inadvertently mishandled, its exposure puts the organization, its people and the people they serve at risk. Will it be used by a competitor to anticipate your every move? Will it be posted on Wikileaks to unveil your company’s secrets to the world?

And what will the motive be? To embarrass? To blackmail? To kill?

In today’s digital era, information is our weakest link. And eLearning sessions, of which information transfer is the sole purpose, are an especially vulnerable target because… When it comes to eLearning, security just isn’t something people think about.

It’s time that they do.

I will be writing more about this very important topic. Stay tuned.  In the meantime, read CoSo’s recent added security with Soc II Certification
